Girringun Objectives
Constitutional objectives of Girringun include the requirement to:
- Pursue and work toward social outcomes to enhance Traditional Owners’ quality of life and building strong and healthy communities by family support, child safety and protection and positive youth development.
- Pursue the revitalization and continuance of traditional languages.
- Assert and pursue Traditional Owners’ interests in land, sea and natural and cultural resource management including their participation in strategic planning processes.
- Assert and pursue traditional ownership of Aboriginal cultural and knowledge in the region.
- Facilitate the provision of suitable training and employment programs for Aboriginal people.
- Work with represented communities towards the survival of Indigenous culture and promotion of other issues.
- Protect and preserve our natural environment for future generations.
- Negotiate and liaise with government on issues affecting Traditional Owners.
- Facilitate the provision of financial resources to carry out the objectives.
These objectives are being met by Girringun working with the following organisations:
- Land and Sea Management Agencies such as Wet Tropics Management Authority, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water, Qld National Parks, Environmental Protection Agency, Marine Parks and Department of Environment & Heritage (Canberra).
- Local Councils such as Cardwell, Hinchinbrook, Dalrymple, St Johnstone Shire Councils.
- Planning and Land Development – Girringun negotiates the involvement of Traditional Owners in future developments with planners and developers.
- Regional Natural Resource Management bodies such as FNQNRM and BDT Board.
- Aboriginal Legal Services on a local and regional level.
- Training and employment strategies for the Traditional Owners through government agencies such as CDEP, TAFE and local schools.
- Federal and State Government agencies regarding regional partnership arrangements and long-term funding arrangements.
- Indigenous Community Volunteers.
