Girringun National Park
A large protected area estate surrounds Cardwell, lying within the traditional land sea and country of Girringun traditional owners.
Following almost a decade of negotiations with government, Lumholtz National Park was re-named Girringun National Park in 2003 by the Queensland government in recognition of the on-going traditional and contemporary connections of the Tradional Owners to the area.
Girringun National Park is currently the largest national park in Queensland. Several areas of former State Forest have recently been incorporated into the National Park.
From its beginnings in the mid 1990s, one of the major aims of Girringun Aboriginal Corporation has been the renaming of this National Park. All of the 9 Traditional Owner groups of Girringun have traditional lands within the park, which is a valuable source of cultural and natural resources for the people.
